Schopenhauer once said that a man can do what he wants, but he cannot want what he wants. Her life had been a photo album of unrealized wants. Now she wondered how many of these were really hers. How many times have her own dreams been driven by secret messages hidden in the magazines she read that crept through the key hole of her consciousness? Perhaps she didn't really want those shoes. Perhaps she didn't really care to be in love anymore.
